The Other Garden: A Poison Path Weekend Intensive
Take a walk down the Poison Path with author, occult herbalist and Poison Path practitioner Coby Michael during this weekend intensive. Discover the magical and medicinal properties of plants like deadly nightshade, wolfsbane and datura. Coby will be offering a series of three intensive workshops, each building on the other introducing attendees to both the scientific and spiritual aspects of the plants of the Poison Path. Attendees will learn about powerful plant allies from a botanical, clinical and occult perspective, including their magical correspondences and application as plant spirit medicines.
Intro to the Poison Path & The Occult Properties of Poison (Saturday) 2-3 hours
This course is intended to provide a basic foundation for people interested in beginning their exploration of the Poison Path. Nothing screams witchcraft more than a seething brew of poisonous plants. They are mysterious, seductive and in many cases psychoactive, but also potentially deadly. So why work with poisonous plants at all?
In this crash course, author and herbalist Coby Michael, will be explaining the what, why and how of the Poison Path. Attendees will learn all of the most frequently used terminology The correct vocabulary will aid immensely in one’s own studies and students can expect to be able to define terms like; entheogen, phyto-gnosis, pharmacognosy, ethnobotany, and alkaloid. In addition to defining these key concepts we will look at how they come to play in the Poison Path.
One of the most fascinating things about the Poison Path is the plants! These are some of the most interesting, terrifying and magical plants you will ever meet, and we will be looking at some of the most infamous. Students will learn each plant’s physical characteristics, how they have been used historically and their medicinal, magical and consciousness altering effects.
Finally we will look at how this is all put into practice, and discuss some of the different options for working with poisonous plants, and where to get started. We will also discuss the importance of safety and dispel some of the misconceptions surrounding this practice. Attendees will also be provided with a list of resources for further reading, as well as sourcing seeds and plants to grow at home.
Practitioners of the Poison Path seek out those plants that have been ostracized or forgotten by most people. The Poison Path is the way of the occultist and the witch, and while there are powerful physical forces at play, including a plant’s toxic and visionary effects, the focus for the Poison Path is on the esoteric applications for these potent forces. In short it is the study and application of poisonous, baneful, invasive, and demonized plants for their occult virtues and to connect with them as familiar spirits.
In this presentation attendees will learn how our understanding of “poison” has evolved over time starting in the ancient world. We will explore the often blurred line between poison, magic and medicine that has been part of the understanding of traditional medicine for millennia. This is to develop a deeper understanding of occult toxicology and its transmutational power. In this presentation Coby will discuss the important role that poison plays in occultism, alchemy and spiritual practice; including our interaction with spiritual forces and the energy of our own environments. Poison is as much a physical substance as it is an archetypal metaphor, and through understanding the important role it has played in human evolution attendees will learn how to protect against spiritual toxins, transmute personal poisons, and harness this power for its healing properties and unique magic. We will explore the connection between poison and witchcraft and how it relates to modern magical practice.
Poison Path Formulary (Sunday) 2-3 hours
In this intermediate-advanced level workshop attendees will learn how to create a variety of formulas at therapeutic dosages using the plants of the Poison Path for pain relief, muscle relaxation, enhanced dreaming and trancework. We will cover topics from each plant’s active constituents and medicinal uses, to alkaloid extraction and the creation of tinctures, salves and infused oils for a wide variety of uses from the medicinal to the magical. Through the lens of the medieval witches flying ointment, attendees will be introduced to the practice spirit flight for divination, spirit communication and astral travel. Attendees will learn some of the history and folklore of medieval flying ointments and their applications in modern magical practice.
Coby will provide recipes on how to prepare your own flying ointments for topical application using a variety of techniques and methods to enhance the extraction of each plant’s active compounds. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to prepare these formulas safely and effectively and will be provided with the tools to begin creating their own formulations. In this workshop we will discuss various techniques of preparation, carrier oils, and extraction methods that can be applied to create both magical and medicinally effective formulas at safe dosages. Attendees will also gain an understanding of how to work with these formulations, what to expect and how to apply them in both a ritual and clinical setting.
Halloween Herb Magic & Ancestral Altar Workshop
Spellcrafter St Petersburg, FL October 23rd 2024
The dark half of the year is a time to remember those who have passed on. It is a time to go within and to reflect on the year that has passed. In many cultures this time of year is known as the time when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, a time to honor our deceased loved ones. Since this is the time when the spirit world is the easiest to access, it is a perfect time for divination and spirit communication.
In this presentation attendees will learn how to work with the dead, collect plants from the cemetery for magical workings and create formulas for necromantic divination. We will explore the precautions and etiquette necessary when working in the realm of the dead as well as plant allies to help us in our pursuits.
Attendees will learn about herbs both benign and baneful that can help to increase our perception of the spirit world and open doorways to initiate communication. Author and occult herbalist Coby Michael will share formulas including anointing oils, incense and smoking blends to honor the ancestors and to open the psychic senses for spirit communication.
Attendees are invited to contribute to the community Samhain/ancestor altar in remembrance and honor of our loved ones who have passed on by bringing photos, objects, or general offerings to be placed on the altar for the Halloween season. We will be constructing and dedicating the altar the evening of the workshop.

Spellwork with Entheogenic Herbs and Fungi PSANCTUM PDX July 2023
It is one thing to go on an entheogenic or psychedelic journey and take everything in as an experience, commune with divinity or connect with the ancestors. It is another to go on this journey with a specific request and ritual actions to follow through with to demand the attention of the spirit world. When we combine the power of spell casting with altered states of consciousness we tap into something powerful and primal beyond description. In this presentation Coby Michael will discuss how to approach this kind of magical practice and what can be expected before during and after. We will explore this in the context of various different allies from the plant and fungi kingdoms.
Dark Herbalism: From the Nefarious to the Numinous
In this presentation, connect with transgressive and adversarial forces for personal empowerment and tap into the "Other" through the aid of spirits from the plant kingdom. Coby with explain the dualistic nature of the green realm and how we can access a wide spectrum of occult forces through the plants that we work with in ritual and how we employ them. All plants have a darkside and lightside, and this evening we will explore the shadows, delving into the spirits, magical applications and consciousness altering effects of some important botanical allies. In this 90 minute workshop we will meet Cain the first farmer, explore the nightside of Venus and walk in the Garden of Hekate.
Ars Venenum: Herbalism for Rebellion and Empowerment
The world is changing, and nature is ready to fight back. There are many plant allies that are willing to help us in that struggle against patriarchy, capitalism and colonialism. They strengthen our bodies, protect our spirits and open our minds. They are sources of wisdom and healing. Power plants that help to dismantle the thoughts and patterns that keep us contained. Passive resistance is no longer an option and the natural world has always known that. From fiercesome poison plant allies that undermine our enemies and make us stronger through their wisdom, to healing balms that have been women's allies for millennia, to patron plants of queerness. In this class we will explore many of the botanical allies that, through their magic, medicine and occult associations have helped marginalized and persecuted groups of people. We will explore "venenum" or "poison" as a metaphor for the rebellious spirit that seeks to catalyze change.

I think it is easy to pigeonhole the “Poison Path” into a very specific set of things. However, what I have found in the decade that I have dedicated myself to this work is that poison is in everything. I don’t mean that just in the sense of “the dose makes the poison,” but that poison is just as ubiquitous an occult, spiritual and magical force as fire, water, earth and air.

Shadow Work With Baneful Herbs
There are many different ways that a plant can be considered “baneful” or taboo. These qualities set these plants apart from those that humans are more comfortable with. How can connecting with these plant spirits through ritual help us work through some of the most uncomfortable and taboo aspects of life? In this class, we will discuss the different types of “bane” and how those qualities give us a clue to that plant’s power. We will look at the occult properties of plants like deadly nightshade, foxglove, rose, and bramble and how they can be used to empower and uplift during the darkest times. We will discuss safe ways to work with the magickal energies and spirits of these plant allies in ritual for shadow work, transition, transformation and healing. Attendees will each be creating their own “baneful” flower essence formula to take with them.

Plants, flowers and herbs usually make us think of growth, fertility and abundance. However, there are many plants that are associated with death, the celebration of life and connecting with those who have passed on. In this workshop, author and herbalist Coby Michael will share the stories of the plants associated with this liminal time of year. We will explore the tales of plants associated with Samhain, the ancient Celtic feast of the Dead and we will discuss the role of flowers in the Mexican Día de Los Muertos celebrations. We will also take a “walk” through the cemetery, and learn the importance of plants that grow among the dead, and the special qualities that this gives them. Working with the dead and honoring one’s ancestors is a core part of many of the world’s spiritual practices, and the one of the oldest forms of human spirituality. In this class we will go over some of the most important herbs for doing that, and we will create our own herbal formula that can be use as an offertory incense or potpourri for honoring and connecting to the spirits during this magical time.
